LAST DEPARTURE

Working with paper and photographic documentation, Lenard Smith’s series of photographs and drawings capture the spirit of sculpture, monuments, architecture and design. The pictures, employ a monochromatic spectrum and schematics that neatly summon feelings of dystopia that employ spatial thinking.

The imagined, hand-crafted models serve as points of reference to those interested in post modern architecture and the constructivist movement. Executed in studio, this body of work suggests a place for refuge and confronts the notion of how major institutional structures hold power.

Smith’s studio practice is, in part, constantly studying the juxtaposition of public and private realms. Drawing from inherit surrealist sensibilities found in indigenous structures and
modern architecture, this suite of photographs captured in a still life approach, offer the viewer an entry to explore scale and form inspired by avant-garde pedagogy.

In the photographs, surfaces appear finished and smooth. There is a playfulness using geometry and movement which introduce another layer to experiencing the gravitas of utopian futures.

The scale-model paper constructions highlight a connection to revolutionary theory and provide a bridge between modern forms of architectural disruptions and sculpture as public art.

A selection of twenty-five drawings from Lenard Smith’s studio accompany the photographs. Smiths titled studies of design, minimalism, architecture, and sculpture all intersect as part of his expanding studio practice.
